One Hat, Four Looks

Last round of Iron Craft was about making something all of mostly from the Dollar Store.
I made and submitted the After Bath Wrap

But I didn't stop there.
I also dressed up a hat I got at the dollar store.

Some supplies were dollar store, many of the extras were not dollar store (which is why this was secondary to the bath wrap).

With some fabric, lace, buttons and velcro I turned a plain hat into a multi-look hat.

This would be really great for traveling since with just a little space you can have four different hats!

For one look I wrapped ribbon around the brim of the hat then made a fabric flower for where the ribbon crossed and used a button for the center of the flower.
This is made with one long strip of fabric and a straight stitch that is then gathered creating a circle.

For the second look I made a four petal fabric flower with a button center.
This flower is created by cutting out circles, folding them over and sewing the ends together.

Third look is lace bunched around in a circle with a red ribbon bow center.

Last look has sheer and satin ribbon into a large bow with a fake flower and pearl bead in the center.

The hat has a soft piece of velcro attached to the brim. Each decoration has a rough piece of velcro attached to the back of it.
The end result is easily removed decorations that wont destroy the hat or fall off easily. And the hat can look fun and beach ready or elegant and nice!

No Sew Hat

I've done multiple posts about craft hope lately.
And I'm not done!
:)

The current round of Craft Hope is hats and bags for kids battling cancer.
These are things I got!
The turn in for this round is approaching soon so I'm probably done creating and going to mail out what I've made but there is still a little time to create something to send.

I've shown you some hats that have little sewing but this one has -no- sewing.
You'll need to cut your fabric at least four inches longer then you need it to fit around the head you are making it for.
Also cut two to four inches taller then you need for normal fit.

Fold your fabric in half length wise.
Using either scissors or a rotary cutter to cut strips that are at least two inches long and about an inch thick. These strips should go up the side of your hat.

Now tie the strips together, closing the hat into a circle.

If you are making for a guy you may want the ends of the knots to be on the inside of your hat so that the fringe is not overly visible. But you can have them stick out whatever side you prefer.

Next gather the top up and tie with a piece of ribbon, yarn or strip of fabric.

The bottom of the hat can be rolled up to "finish" the look or make it fit better.

That's all!
A strip of fabric, some scissors and a piece of ribbon and you have a cute hat.

Easy Cotton Beanie

There is still time to make hats and bags for the current craft hope project that benefits kids battling cancer.

This post is how to make a beanie really quick and easy.

I cut out a rectangle of fabric that measured twelve inches tall by eighteen and one half inches long.

I folded the bottom up twice and sewed straight across to make a brim.
Next I folded in half with pattern together and sewed up the side, leaving the top untouched.

I turned the fabric back right side out. I positioned the side seam to be in the back and accordion folded the top a couple inches down.

I put a pin through the folds and prepared a needle for hand sewing.
I sewed straight through the folds multiple times to make it stay tight.

Last I used pinking shears to cut strips down from the top, careful not to cut where I sewed down the side.

This would also be great to do with fleece.

Teddy Bear Hat

Is your little one your teddy bear?
With a little sewing and some time you can create a cute hat to keep your little one warm and show how great of a teddy bear they are.
(or go the fast and easy way and buy one!)

For most little kids hats you will want between 18-20 inches around the brim. I planned about 19 inches then divided that by 4 to get how wide the base of the points should be.
I made the height of the main part of the hat about four inches tall and the side of a point is about five inches tall.
I also cut out four half circles in the light brown fleece and two out of light pink felt.
I sewed the pink onto one of the ears then covered it with the other ear and sewed with right sides together. Then flipped right sides out.

Each side of the triangles will sew to the side next to it.

You will need to find the back of your hat and where your sides will be. Before you sew up the sides stick your ears in just enough to sew them down.

For the brim, fold in towards the inside and sew down. You may need to tweak some points here and there to work better for you.

There you go, a cute fleece hat to keep your little teddy bear warm and adorable!

Easy Fleece Hat

Continuing with making hats and bags for little kids who are suffering from cancer for Craft Hope.

This time I made a simple fleece hat for a little girl.
I started with a piece of pink fleece measuring about 8 inches tall by 19 inches long.
I folded it so that the "right" sides were together and sewed across the top and down the side.

Turn the square right side out and roll the unfinished edge up and sew to create a "brim".

Next I pinched the top corners and sewed across to make little points.
To add a little extra pretty, I sewed ribbon around the brim where I previously sewed it down.
I also wrapped a short section of ribbon around the top points and tied twice.

For more flair I cut out a simple light pink flower from felt and a dark pink circle for the center and sewed it down.

So cute!
Ready to go to a little girl warrior battling cancer.
